Anna Marandu
Form IV
Chagga Tribe (Kilimanjaro Region)
Born 5 May 1990 in Dar es Salaam
Favorite subject:
Geography
Future dreams:
Anna really wants to become an accountant, although she says that "mathematics lets me down." She likes being responsible for money and keeping track of details; she remembers how her father, before his death, used to be asked to do the accounts for all the local shop owners. Anna says that if she cannot become an accountant, law might be interesting.
Hobbies:
Anna loves listening to music—especially gospel and Kiswahili rap. She likes to sing along with the radio, but is too shy to sing alone in front of others.
Her parents:
Anna’s father died in 1995 after a long illness. During the course of his illness, her father's business partner stole most of the family's money, and Anna's mother—also ill—was too sick to press charges in court. Her mother is still alive but, according to Anna, is barely able to care for herself, let alone for Anna.
Her siblings:
Anna is an only child.
Her guardian:
Anna's guardian is her mother, who is living in Mbezi.
How Anna came to Bethsaida:
Anna heard of Bethsaida at a prayer meeting at her church where a man from the Agape Center, a Catholic charity, offered prayers for a new orphans' secondary school. That night she prayed and dreamt of a place full of trees, with few houses and many girls. Anna believes the place she dreamt of was Bethsaida and that God answered her prayers by bringing her here.
What Anna wants others to know about her:
Anna has bad allergies to cassava leaves, bananas and avocadoes. She is praying for help to continue studying next year in Forms V and VI, and she really wants to learn how to use a computer.
