Happy Kiwale
Form IV
Bena Tribe (Iringa Region)
Born 12 September 1991 in Mfindi
Favorite subject:
Mathematics
Future dreams:
Happy wants to become an accountant, like Mr. Machary, the founder of the school and the chairman of the Board of Trustees. Like Mr. Machary, Happy wants to be able to build an orphanage some day to continue helping young girls like herself.
Hobbies:
Happy likes to play traditional music on the drums, although she has been studying so hard lately she has not had a lot of time to practice!
Her parents:
Happy’s father died in 1995, when Happy was only four years old, from unknown causes, and her mother died four years later—Happy is not sure what killed her either, only that she had suffered from bad ulcers for many years.
Her siblings:
Happy has three brothers, all of whom are older and live independently in Dar es Salaam. She does not get to see them very often.
Her guardian:
Happy's guardian is her aunt, to whom she is very attached. Happy is so grateful to be at Bethsaida, however, because she does not think her aunt could afford to continue supporting Happy in addition to her aunt's own family.
How Happy came to Bethsaida:
Once her mother died, Happy moved from her home in Mfindi, Iringa to live with her aunt in Dar es Salaam. When she did not pass her Standard 7 graduation exam, Happy and her aunt did not know what to do. Luckily, Happy's aunt heard about Bethsaida on the radio and arranged for Happy to be interviewed by Mama Maristela, Bethsaida’s headmistress.
What Happy wants others to know about her:
Happy says that she has been worried a lot lately—"Often I sit and think: what will I do when I finish Form IV?" She is really hoping to be able to finish her schooling, so that she can study at university and become an accountant.
