Muha Tribe (Mbeya Region)

Born 23 September 1991 in Dar es Salaam

Future dreams:

Irene either wants to become an accountant or an engineer, and she studies very hard to achieve one of these goals.

Hobbies:

Irene loves listening to Gospel-flavored music in her free time.

Her parents:

While Irene’s father died in 2000, apparently of a very bad case of malaria, Irene is one of the few exceptions at Bethsaida, as her mother is still alive. Nevertheless, the two do not have any regular contact (they see each other once a year), and Irene’s mother has very little money.

Her siblings:

Irene has one elder sister called Alice, who lives – unlike Irene – with their mother in Dar es Salaam.

Her guardian:

One would expect Irene’s mother to be her guardian, but their relationship seems to be frozen in some way, and the mother is not able to take care of her second child. Instead, Irene’s aunt and her uncles play the role of her guardians and try to provide her with everything she needs when she comes home from Bethsaida during the holidays.

How Irene came to Bethsaida:

Irene’s mother heard about Bethsaida from a friend and told Irene about the possibility of studying here without paying any school fees. Once Irene had heard about this, she was very excited, attended an interview, and was accepted.

What Irene wants others to know about her:

“I really wish to reach university and I hope for my cousins that they all get sponsors for being able to study.”
