Korodetha Maganga
Form IV
Nyamwezi Tribe (Tabora Region)
Born 23 October 1990 in Kigoma
Favorite subject:
Biology
Future dreams:
Korodetha wants to be an obstetrician when she grows up. There are very few doctors specializing in reproductive health in Tanzania, and many women suffer in childbirth, especially if they live in rural villages. Korodetha knows this only too well—her mother died while giving birth to Korodetha’s younger sister.
Hobbies:
Korodetha has a lot of hobbies. In her free time she likes to cook, have conversations with her friends, exchange ideas, sing, help people in their activities and do exercises.
Her parents:
Korodetha’s father died in 1997 in a car accident; less than one year later, her mother died in childbirth.
Her siblings:
Korodetha has one older brother and two sisters, one older and one younger.
Her guardian:
Korodetha's guardian is her uncle, to whom she is so grateful for all his care and love. Without her uncle, Korodetha would never have been able to go to school.
How Korodetha came to Bethsaida:
Korodetha was living with her grandmother after her parents' death, and it was very difficult for her to go to school. Her grandmother would have enough money to send her for maybe three months at a time, and then she would have to bring Korodetha home and put her to work on their land. When Korodetha's uncle visited, he decided to return with Korodetha to Dar and put her in a government school. In Dar, Korodetha quickly made up her lost ground, doing three years of schooling in one year. Korodetha's uncle arranged for Korodetha to be interviewed by Bethsaida when he heard of the school on the radio, and she joined Bethsaida's Form I in 2006.
What Korodetha wants others to know about her:
Korodetha really wants to attend Forms V and VI and finish her secondary education. She says she feels a "pain in my heart that I cannot reach my ambitions."
