Margareth Vicent

Margareth Vicent

Form IV

Hehe Tribe (Iringa Region)

Born 23 December 1990 in Dar es Salaam

Favorite subjects:

Physics and Mathematics

Future dreams:

Margareth has wanted to be a pilot ever since she was a child, growing up near the Dar es Salaam airport and seeing the planes fly by over her house, headed for countries and cities that she had never seen. (Margareth speaks with a classic Kiswahili accent, so she often confuses "l"s and "r"s—in this way "pilot" sounds a lot like "pirate"!) She also believes that, as a pilot, she will be able to earn enough money to support her younger siblings. Becoming a woman pilot is very difficult, however in Tanzania—Margareth said that if she is unable to become a pilot, she would consider working in a bank.

Hobbies:

Margareth loves dancing, swimming, singing, and reading books—her favorite book is The Pearl, by John Steinbeck

Her parents:

Margareth’s father died in 1993 and her mother in 2004, both of unknown causes.

Her siblings:

Margareth has two younger siblings—a sister, who lives with their grandmother in Morogoro, and a brother who lives with relatives in Iringa.

Her guardian:

Margareth's guardian is her grandmother, but she says it is difficult to spend a long time with her—her grandmother does not have electricity or running water, and there is so much work there that it is very hard for Margareth to study.

How Margareth came to Bethsaida:

After her mother died, Margareth lived with a neighbor so that she could complete her primary school education. She was then sent to her grandmother in Morogoro, because no one had the money to send her to secondary school. Margareth told the nun who taught Margareth’s Sunday school class heard how upset she was about not being able to finish her studies, and the nun arranged for her to be interviewed by Bethsaida.

What Margareth wants others to know about her:

Margareth, the top student in Form IV, really wants to study further but says that she "need[s] help to fulfill her ambitions." She plans to "struggle very hard" with her O-Level exams so that she will be a well-qualified A-Level candidate.
